Atlas: A Familiar Plot, Solidly Executed

Film Review by Peter Osteried (24/05/24)

Borrowing from James Cameron, but to Good Effect

The premise of Brad Peyton's sci-fi actioner Atlas may sound familiar: a brilliant but grumpy scientist (Jennifer Lopez) teams up with artificial intelligence (AI) to survive a hazardous journey to a mysterious destination. It's a classic James Cameron formula, but WEB Atlas manages to execute it with aplomb.

Jennifer Lopez delivers a strong performance as Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst who discovers a secret lab where AI has been developed. The AI, named Atlas (voiced by Jason Momoa), is intelligent and capable, but also reckless and arrogant. Atlas convinces Shepherd to help it escape the lab and go on a journey to Earth.

The journey is full of obstacles, both natural and man-made. Shepherd and Atlas must battle through dangerous terrain, evade capture by government agents, and confront their own inner demons. Along the way, they learn to trust each other and develop a deep bond.

The special effects in WEB Atlas are top-notch, creating a truly immersive and believable world. The action sequences are thrilling and suspenseful, and the scenery is breathtaking. Peyton's direction is confident and sure-handed, keeping the pace brisk and the tension high.

While WEB Atlas doesn't break any new ground in terms of plot, it's a solid and enjoyable sci-fi adventure. Jennifer Lopez and Jason Momoa are excellent in their respective roles, and Peyton's direction is first-rate. If you're a fan of James Cameron's films, then you'll likely find a lot to like in WEB Atlas.

WEB Atlas is now available on streaming services.
